The program
The Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology Applied to Health (PPGBioSaude) offers theoretical and technical knowledge to students to help them become active professionals. The Program aims at providing students with competence and scientific independence in the areas of Cell Biology and Molecular Biology, with focus on their application to health. PPGBioSaude is accredited by CAPES (approval letter no. 201-23/2011).
Areas of Concentration
Genetics and Molecular Biology of Human and Animal Pathologies (MOLBIOL)
This area involves two lines of research:
Biochemical Molecular Diagnosis;
Genetics of Human Diseases
Cell Biology Applied to Human and Animal Health (CELLBIOL)
This area involves three lines of research:
Oncogenesis and Mutagenesis;
Stem Cells and Cell Therapy;
Molecular and Pharmacological Biochemistry of Bioactive Compounds
Lines of Research
Biochemistry and Genetics of Human Diseases
This line of research aims to study biochemical and genetic aspects of human diseases with emphasis on studies of genetic variability associated with diseases, and gene expression studies. The projects included in this line of research also evaluate variations in the human genome and their association with response to drugs, prognosis of diseases, and forensic identification.

Molecular Diagnosis
The purposes of this line of research are development and evaluation of diagnostic processes for human and animal diseases, with emphasis on infectious diseases caused by viruses and bacteria. The projects included in this line of research also evaluate prognosis and response to treatment, and epidemiological analyses.
Dr. Daniel Simon
Dra. Maria Lúcia Rosa Rossetti
Dr. Vagner Ricardo Lunge
Stem Cells and Cell Therapy
This line of research comprises projects that aim at broadening the knowledge on the biology and therapeutic applications of adult stem cells, especially mesenchymal stem/stromal cells, from humans and various animal species. The parameters studied include gene expression, proliferation and differentiation abilities, and interaction with biomaterials. Some projects that are implemented with the participation of hospitals have the purpose of evaluating the therapeutic potential of these cells on patients; additionally, preclinical protocols are also widely studied. The results are expected to contribute to cell therapy and tissue engineering by conceptually strengthening experimental designs, which could improve the efficiency of basic, preclinical, and clinical studies in this area.
Dr. Lindolfo da Silva Meirelles
Oncogenesis and Mutagenesis
This line of research encompasses projects related to identification and evaluation of substances with mutagenic, antimutagenic, and/or carcinogenic potential, as well as characterization of the molecular mechanisms involved in these processes. Additionally, this line of research includes projects on the establishment of tumor-derived cell lines, and factors that affect the sensitivity of these cells to routine treatments for cancer patients.

Pharmacological and Molecular Biochemistry of Bioactive Compounds
This line of research comprehends the isolation and chemical and biochemical characterization of bioactive compounds of natural origin; the study of the pharmacological profile of natural and synthetic compounds; the use of structural bioinformatics tools for the study of relationships between structure and function of biological macromolecules; and the identification of novel bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential.
